So I'm still looking for the wild hogs they say are here in New York and are freebies, shoot on sight with no limit. I was hoping to have a pig roast by now but I haven't found any in my area, not yet...

I'd like to know what any of you have used for hunting these bacon bits on hoofs. Anyone ever use a .357 to take a hog?

From what I know of around here in TX, an auto-loading rifle and a .44 revolver back-up are fairly standard. Hogs are mean, you are prey to them, and they're usually in groups.

To be honest about it I have been using my 308 Garand on feral hogs and a 92 Winchester clone in 357 or 45LC on Javalinas. The 308 will generally nail them down pretty quick. I use the Garand as that was the handiest rifle I was most familiar with. The area where we have been taking them is, Feral hogs Guadalupe county and Javalina in Webb county.(TEXAS) as most feral hogs have to be taken at night or in poor light a scope is not good. The feral hogs here have a lot of area to hide in and can get to be quite large and as said by Eli, they will come looking for you so a 44mag or a 45 are used as back ups to the rifles. Tried a 12 guage with 00buck and it seems to PO the really large ones. Don't know how large they are in your area so can't really recommend anything but a hi powered large caliber rifle if they are over 200 lbs. We have taken them up to 400lbs but the big ones got away. Here in Texas and Louisiana they are like small tanks when the move thru the brush.

BTW as food they suck! You need to go for the smaller ones if you plan on eating one. Here we are taking them to save crops so size does not matter and the ranchers are happy to see you just please don't shoot the livestock. The boars are totally useless except for bragging rights. Even the dogs pass on them. No limit seems to be the state of things now as the feral hogs breed so rapidly they push game animals out of the area. They are quite a challenge to hunt as they appear to be smarter than us. Have fun on your hunt but watch your six.

Would a 12 ga slug gun work?

A slug gun will work if you are sitting in a tree stand. I use an AR, because ammo is cheap, and the mags hold 30 rounds. I have shot pigs with a 308, and they ran off. I have hit them with a 223, and they drop like a rock. Shot placement is everything on pigs. You will get one good shot, and them you have small tanks moving 30 mph. As said earlier, in Texas we are killing them to protect crops, native wildlife, and in some cases our selves.

The only wild hogs we have in Wisconsin are the 2 legged kind.
We hunt them with a can of malt liquor and a trojan.

Here's some bacon crossing the road. I believe the video was taken somewhere outside of either Houston or Austin, Texas. Yeah, we have a hog problem in Texas

We went on a hog hunt a few years ago, my friend used a .357, no problems. I used a .44 mag. Use a decent bullet.
Like canes said, STAB 'EM. :D

This is increasing common here, seems like a 'sporting purpose' for all sorts of firearms! I'd like a BM59 or MMG please!

I haven't found anything that doesn't work but I really like the 35 Whelen.

I always wondered how militaty training as a gunner could be used in civilian life. I can tell you for sure this is not an easy task.
