I have a friend who is a professional wood worker. He makes cabinets, desks and wall units, all very expensive, solid and look great. He recently gave me several hints for doing gun stocks. Number one put about a half a cap full of "Japan Drier" in what ever finish you're applying. I've tried it and the finish does dry a lot faster and completely. The second tip I haven't tried yet but intend to. He took me to a wood working store which instead of selling walnut stain sells walnut dye. Dye isn't effected by sap wood or other wood imperfections. Dye goes on like stain and you can get all colors or shades of wood, like walnut, oak, mahogany ect. I'm going to dye a stock one day this week and will post more when completed.

The dye thing is very interesting. Can't wait to see your results.

I think it will work. I can tell you that Feiblings shoe dye works on sap wood so I'm guessing wood dye will work great.

All I have ever used on gun stocks is dye. I started using it on cabinets a few years ago. The difference between using stains and dyes in night and day. I hate stain

I use fiebling's. Brown with a dash of red. Mix in some BLO and instant aged furniture!!

I think that Fiebing's and wood dyes are both aniline dyes so they're pretty much the same thing. Fiebing's Dark Brown just accidentally looks good.
