Advice on what modern bolt action rilfe to buy in 30-06

Guys,

I have all this M2 Ball ammo and only a Mini-G and Garand to shoot it in. I'd like to have a new or used in nice condition, bolt rifle like a Remington 700 in 30-06 to put some of this extra ball ammo through. That is IF I can expect decent groups with a new bolt rifle, no sense spending the money to find out I'll have to reload for it, defeats my idea.

I've had a Rem 700 in .270 way before I got into milsurps, I love that rifle, like new 70's vintage, the .270 is nothing but a neck down 30-06 case. It shoots below 1 MOA at 100 yards with my 110gr V-Max ground chuck reloads. I can get a new barrel in 30-06 pretty cheap at dealer cost through Brownell's and have that installed but I think I rather just sell another gun I don't use much and buy another bolt in 30-06. I spent a lot of time setting up the .270 and finding sweet loads to tear it down now.

I was picking up an oil filter in WalMart today, when I checked out in the sporting dept I see they have a Rem 770 with a cheap scope for $375.00. I can get it cheaper then WalMart price through my buddy who is an FFL, he only charges me $25-50 over cost depending on the gun & price. Anyone have one of these Rem 770 in 30-06 and run M2 Ball through it? Or does anyone have advice on a different brand/model?

I'll tell ya Guy,the only sporting Rifle that I still own is an original Ruger M77 in 7mm Rem mag.I love those Rugers,and it will still shoot 1 hole ragged groups at 100 yrds after all these Years.The M77 Mark 2's work just as well(My wife has a SS in .243.

I would think you will be dissapointed with surplus ammo in a modern rifle if you are expecting great accuracy. JMO

I've got a 700BDL in 7mm Rem Mag. I love it. Had a trigger job done and it's money.

Do you have a buddy with any .30-06 you can try out? I'd be surprised if the rifle couldn't do "well enough" to get the job done with the surplus.

My best friend purchased a Tikka from Cabela's two years ago. It was a package deal with scope and mounts. Shoots like a laser and he's had no issues.

GEEESSS Guy,Why buy a standard shift when you can buy an auto.
A good bolt will cost as much as a semi auto.
Todays semi's will shoot as good as you can.
The Browning long trac, in 30-06.Is fantastic.
As you know I don't favor hand crankers.

Guy, I don't care for the Remington 770! Remington disappointed me with it's production. To

me the rifle just feels and looks cheap! I'm a Remington 700 SPS or SPS SS fan. Now having said this I've never owned or fired a 770 and the fellows I know that have them really like them!
I've been taking my nephew deer hunting for the last several years and this last year I bought him a Marlin-XL7C in .270 Win. I read several reviews and I'm happy with this rifle. Out of the box with a $75.00 Bushnell Banner scope and Winchester 150 gr factory ammo, it shoots a 3/4" group @ 100 yds from the bench. (3 shots) Plenty good for whitetail. He wound up killing a lil 8 pt at 170 yds and a doe at 190 yds this past season. Rifle with scope and mounts and sling (all purchased seperately) cost me around $400.00

Here's one of my favorite reviews for the rifle as well as the reason I usd 150 gr ammo rather than the traditional 130 gr a .270 seems to like so well.

This link takes you to Marlin's web page and gives you the specs on the rifle. I'm not a big fan of the "Savage Rifle" type triggers, but the Marlin has a similar trigger as the Savage or a "Glock" pistol. The rifle I bought has a 'lil bit of creep in the trigger, but it breaks at about 3lbs on my scale. The price was right and I've been well pleased with the Marlin I bought the boy!

I still like a quality firearm. I have a 700 and it is not up to the old model 70 fit and finish. I'm talking controlled feed 70-not push feed.

It's hard to beat a Ruger M-77! I used mine for over twenty years and has stood by me. Taken Black Bear and Moose..Good shooter and not that expensive.

A good rifle is a good rifle whether it is a Rem, Mar, Win etc. I like Remington rifles. I have the 700 BDl in 30.06 and my son has the 700 CDL in 270. Both are accurate and reliable. Stay away from the 700 ADLs. Argueing over the best rifle is like arguing over which is best for North America, the 270 round or the 30.06 round. There are no winners, even though the 30.06 is the best one. ;)

Yet my first Remington was a ADL. It was a 1980's model. Beautiful walnut wood stock, very accurate! I gave it to my son and bought a Winchester Model 70 in 30-06. Then I traded the Model 70 for a Remington Sportsman 78 in .270. (Wish I'd kept the Model 70 because of what it was.) Now I just buy the Remingtonton SPS or SPS SS, then remove the piece of %$#$%^^ stocks and drop them in a Bell Carlson Medalist stock.
I now own a Remington SPS in .308 Win, I have 3 Remington SPS SS. One is in 300 Ultra Mag, one in .243 Win. and one in Winchester 270 short Mag. Plus I still have the Sportsman 78, and I have a Remington Model 7 in .243 Win.
I like Remington rifles! (at least those built on the 700 action) Yet I have a Weatherby Vanguard in .270 WSM that is a shooter, but it got a new trigger within the first week.The Marlin was a pleasant surprise too! I've never owned a Ruger Rifle, shot several of them. They're a fine weapon but the ones I've been around needed a new trigger cause the pull on their triggers was 7 + lbs!

I'd get a bolt action rifle designed for that government ammo. If you're going to spend the money, why not get your garand and mini-g a cousin to keep company?

Nothing wrong with a modern rifle, but if I was going with something new, it would be on a much more affordable caliber with better performance.

You should buy a 1903.

From what I am told Savage has some excellent rifles now. I have a ruger M77 in .308 and it is a nice rifle, though I have never shot it, looks good though lol. That thing is brand new and has sat in the safe for two years, it's next to get sold lol. Remington used to make a 798 bolt action that used a mauser action and was a relatively nice rifle for a decent price. They shoot excellent and look good, jst not a 700 action. I think they ran new for around $400-$500, worth a look.
