I haven't bought a shotgun in 30 years. Over the last couple years I've had a growing interest in adding one to the inventory. I was shocked you cannot get a decent shotgun for less than $1k. Of course I'm your typical cheap buyer who wants one shotgun that'll do everything and pay nothing for it. But last I looked a good quality shotgun was $500 to $750.

I guess it's just the new norm?

A remington 870 isn't $500 anymore? http://www.cabelas.com/product/Remington-Commemorative-Shotgun/2332458.uts?searchPath=%2Fbrowse.cmd%3FcategoryId% 3D734095080%26CQ_search%3Dremington%2B870

Swap out barrel and it'll do anything, won't it? Mine does.

Lots of choices brand new well under $1k:

A Remington from years past is a great shotgun. Today that brand is having problems.

100% accurate statement. If you watch GB auctions you can find an older Rem 870 or 1187 for a lot less than $1k. The models with the metal trigger guard are typically better than those with the plastic.

What exactly are you looking to do with, or features of, the shotgun?

Uses: 3-gun (for fun), skeet (for fun) and maybe whack a duck or two. That pretty much summarizes what I'm looking to do with it. I know I probably need the different shotguns to do it right but these are just side activities that I am not too serious about so getting 3 guns and spending a load of cash isn't going to happen.
