What is the best method for whiting out the numbers and writing on firearms? I have seen a few with done and I think it dresses the gun up nice. Any input would be great.

Colter,
I like to use White Crayola Crayon. You gob it on,then rub with an old t-shirt.The letters are filled in,but not permanantly. You can remove the Crayon with a toothbrush. For permanent use I use white model paint, and wipe with a paint thinner wetted Paper towel.HTH,

White "Lacquer Stik". Rub it on/into the lettering and wipe off excess with a cloth wetted with mineral oil. Really easy.

I use a grease pencil. Rub the pencil into the numbering/lettering and wipe down with denatured alcohol.

I used a B Paintstick Marker by Markal. Takes well and cleans up with MS. I like it because it has a 'antique' off white shade to it, more character then bright white, IMHO.

Brownell sells a kit that you can do white, gold or silver. I've used them to get a contrast on factory engraved pieces and it really makes them stand out. Colt came out with some commeratives that are hard to see with out the contrast. And the white makes the serial numbers really show up when you take pics for insurance purposes.

I use white "Rub N' Buff" on my M1, and the same in gold leaf on my other rifles. Just dab it on the lettering with a Q-tip, let it dry, and wipe the excess off. Stays put, and doesn't seem to be affected by oil or solvents.

Hey lead, I asked for methods of how to do the lettering, not whether or not you liked it. Take your opinions and your gold toothed pimp to the war room and stay off this thread unless you have something to contribute.

It was a war weapon. It killed people. To bring it back to what it was I think is okay.I think the bold white lettering degrades it.It's not what it was.
Just an old man's opinion.

I got sad news for you. All of the firearms in our armory were filled with white substance, sometimes it was white out fluid and some times it was grease pencil. The reason for this was to clearly see the serial numbers and not for beauty. Even Ma Duece got the treatment as well as our tubes. If it went bang and was in the inventory it got marked! We did not have these firearms in storage for parades. They went into service with the white stuff in their serial numbers! Never got a complaint from the other guys.

I understand and you do not stand alone. I was told that all that white stuff would be removed by a Major. He felt that it was possible the other guy would see the white. I advised him that if the other guy got close enough to see the white, the guy carrying it was either a sleep or trying to get the DXXn thing unjammed.(Early years of the M16).The white stayed but some of the guys took it off and I did not care as it was easy to do the few that had the whiting removed and it was their butt in the field. Just one of those oddities.

Thanks for understanding. I am not trying to put anyone down and hope it does not come out that way,but as you might note some times I draw from the past things that stuck with me.

Mix,
I see you have a HRA Receiver that has a speckled finish. I picked one up awhile back like it and have seen a few others now and then. Kinda odd

Same thing I've used on mine.
