BM59 brass ejects at 12:00 o'clock

Received BM59 last December and finally took it shooting.

Brass ejects between 12:00 and 1:00. My BM59E I have ejects between 3:00 and 5:00.

Criterion barrel modified by Shuff. Ammo used was PMC .308 and PPU 7.62 x 51 NATO.

Do I need a Schuster valve to slow it down?

It sounds like it's running a little hot. A Schuster should help.

Hoping you could tell me what drill size to start making relief port, and for cleaning purposes believe it would be easier to clean.

Also was thinking of using a garand gas plug so I don't ruin a BM59 part.

You did your homework. On my BM59 and BM14 I drilled a Beretta plug. I started out at 1/16 and ended up at 3/32 (.093) Turned them into pussycats. It's crazy that the hole is that big but they function perfectly.

Thank you for the information. Now I know where to start. Plan on using a BM59 gas plug from Standard Parts.

Changed my mind on using a Garand plug. I'm used to working on FALs. This is a different beast.

Old Dominion, how long is your oprod spring? It should be between 18 and 18.5 inches. These kits are coming with short springs and I've been swapping them out for longer ones, I could have missed one. Still though, I test fire these and make sure they spit the shells out to between 1 and 5.

Spring is 18- 3/8 inch long. Should I get Garand spring and cut to 18.5 inch?

No Sir, your spring is fine. The easiest thing to do is to throw a Schuster in these things. With the Schuster you won't have to worry about what ammo you feed it. If you want to drill a hole in your gas screw start under 1/16 and move up. In my opinion though I'd go Schuster so you have a broad range of ammo you can tune to.

Are the Schuster valves easy to clean? soak in solvent to clean? Also how often to clean? 100 rds? 500rds?

What is the best method to clean Schuster valve? I'm an FAL guy so the BM59 is a new ball game to me.

You know, I've never cleaned one. Seriously, hundreds of rounds through em, never cleaned it. I'm guessing that if you turn the valve even one click, the carbon would be cut out.

Drilled 1/16 hole in center of gas screw and brass is ejecting at 3:00 to 4:00. Hope this helps others in future.
