So what do you guys think? Wrong/non USGI M1C conversion..., ground off WRA numbers on the oprod, ground off drawing numbers on the receiver, shot out 43 SA barrel, otherwise this thing is cool!

What of the;
stock?
Butt plate?
rear sights?
look at all the WRA follower parts!
WRA gas cylinder!
WRA rear guard!
Not sure on the front guard
Isn't that WRA bullet guide worth a small fortune too?

I don't know, I'm hoping some of the parts might sell. I've contacted the owner to let him know what he has. Truthfully though, a few of the big items are junk. The receiver is hacked and the drawing numbers are gone, the oprod has the drawing numbers ground off, the barrel is toast, the stock has no cartouche and a small sliver crack around the sling swivel hole. The rest of the thing is ALL YUMMY though.

Something was done, you see the receiver? Look at the other items I listed, lots of fubar. I'm sure the owner will have his take on this though and we'll see what happens. I already have a few items done on the rifle, but I had to email once I saw all these valuable parts just keep piling up.

It's a winchester, for god's sake. pound the barrel into the dirt to hold up your plants, use the receiver as a door stop in the shop, and use the stock to flip dog crap into the neighbor's yard. the rest of the little parts would look nice at the bottom of your koi pond

I have a Win 144,163 sitting here just SCREAMING for some of those parts. I sure hope he listens to the $$$ when you try to talk him out of it. If it's only a Mini G he needs I will send a replacement ASAP. ;-)

It would have been a cool gun, if it wasn't screwed up by drilling and grinding on it. I would sell as many parts as I could, and make it a mag fed mini G.

Any mention of why all the grinding?

Rick B

Neat piece you got there. I would like the receiver possibly if he is selling it. The stock is the correct WB stock with the correct full border butt plate. You mentioned the bullet guide and it isn't anything special. Now if it was without the W.R.A. and the B was right next to the numbers you would have a real early RS period. The gas cylinder has me miffed as it should barely have a ledge where it turns up to the sight base and the rear ring should be round. I am wondering if it was changed out when the barrel was? The rest of the pats look nice for this period. Looks like someone was just being silly or thought maybe grinding off the drawing numbers would save them from getting caught having taken it. Makes no sense actually since all of those areas are hidden under the wood if it was for show and prep to be blued. Rick B

Rick B

I also noticed they ground down the gas plug removing the rings. You can see burs on the edge leading into the slot. I'm thinking they were going to blue this rifle. Rick B

Rick, the gas cylinder does have the round rear ring. The cylinder is WRA.

Hello all, New to the forum. This is my rifle so I thought I would chime in a little on what is known about it. The Original owner unfortunately has passed. He was a friend of my Grandfathers and left all his possessions to him. It was then given to me. I do know the orig owner was a machinist by trade so that may explain the grinding though I still am not sure why. I was told he fought in WW2 or Korea but they weren't sure because he never spoke about it. Judging by his age when he died I am betting WW2. If it hadn't been ground on I would left it alone. I am not a collector and probably never will be but I am a shooter so I decided it was a win win for everyone to part it out. I'll get a good shooting rifle built exactly how I want it and some collectors will get some rare parts for their correct winchester build. Mr. Shufflin ahas been very helpful and patient with me even though I constantly add things and pester him incessantly. Oh, and you purists out there can feel free to vent on me. I completly understand your pain and don't mind a bit. If anyone is interested I can try and get more info on the rifle.

Welcome HighAngle. Some of these nitwits (not on this forum) will equate this whole operation to something like melting down the liberty bell to make paperweights. Not so. The replacement barrel and the removing of the numbers killed that rifle as a collectible so by using the parts on other incomplete collectibles you're performing a service. Back in the 50's people were grinding numbers off of milsurp guns like crazy. They would even grind the Gov't Prop. stamps off of 1911's that were purchased from the Gov't. For about a $1500 you could find the parts to correct the rifle but it will be a corrected rifle and not an original one. You're doing the right thing in my opinion. Stu

The replacement barrel on it was a Springfield 43 so I bet that was done while the rifle was still in service by a unit armorer after failing an inspection/gauge session probably in 1943 or early 44? I am no expert but that is how the army does it now. Every 6 months to a year the Battalion armorer and a few civilians come through and do a functions check/inspection then gauge. If it fails they replace the barrel. I can't imagine the process has changed much. Once again I am no expert but everything else on this rifle seems to be original WRA. It doesn't look like it has ever been refurbished in any way or upgraded to newer parts after the factory other than that barrel. You here stories of "unaccounted" for military property after WW2 and to lesser degree wars after that up until the last few where I can guarantee no one is taking home a M4. I am reluctant to think the Old timer that owned it all these years "acquired" it on his way out of the service because of the obvious folklore but I think its pretty obvious this baby did not see Korea. Is there any chance this was a CMP rifle? That doesn't seem likely either. Does anyone know of another way to get a hold of a Garand in the 40s or 50's other than through CMP? I need to call my Grandfather again but he was under the impression the original owner had it A LONG time.

Hi, I'm new to this forum! Any chance this could have been a USGI's "bring back" rifle? I haven't read a lot about this program, but a friend of mines Father brought back a ton of German stuff including a Luger. Would someone shed some light on this program for me.
Thanks and great forum!

I think from what I've read that it was not ok to bring back US arms. Enemy arms were fair game as well as equipment. My Dad brought a ton of stuff back from occupied Japan. Usually there was a chit issued to make it ok. He was lucky being in charge of a whole warehouse full of stuff, he had his pick.
