All my pistols are .45ACP, and when I'm out I've got 230 gr. hydrashoks. That's also what's in my nightstand.

230gr ball for my 1911 and 180gr( I reload) for my snubbie 38 spcl 147 gr for my Hi power 250 gr FN for my SA. I believe in weight!

I generally use the same concept for all my self defense pistols. Half jacket controlled expansion (hollow point) in the heaviest weight available. While this combo means a slower moving projectile the size when expanded and the weight provide the necessary mass to convey the most energy. This creates the shock or trauma hopefully in a center mass which will end the threat. Most self defense shootings are within a 21 foot range so speed isn't as critical as in hunting where the shot travels a much larger distance. I'm anxious to here some other ideas as I'm sure each of us prefer different loads for different reasons.

Mixmaster, 230 gr. ball? Interesting choice. Why not hollow points? Just curious.

Howie John Moses Browning designed the 1911 to feed round ball ammo. You will note that all cartridges used by Browning designs are Ball ammo. His idea was that the ball provided the best method of getting the cartridge into the chamber. George Luger agreed and the 9mm is ball. I will use half jacketed ball as long as the nose is round as JMB designed it. Mass is delivered at short range and even if body armor stops the bullet you still have to pick up your butt from the ground from the mass it stopped. Not trying to be a SA here just what I have personal knowledge of. MARKSMANSHIP that is what places the ball where it should be!

hydrashok, gold dot, but recently switched to critical defence (all 45 acp). the hornady shoot real nice out of my para, and like the expansion it gives, specially as it's coming out of a short tube.

I am currently carrying Corbon +p .45 ACP JHP, 200 grain. It has a 1050 FPS rating. But Hydrashock was what I always carried back in the days when I was in law enforcement as my duty and home ammo. Either is a good round.
