Isn't removing the serial number from the receiver illegal???

I sure thought it was illegal to remove the serial number from a fire arm. Am I right or wrong about that?

Looks like someone ground or polished off the heal markings......

If the heel has been ground or polished off in order to remove or conceal the numbers it's a felony to have the rifle in your possession. The person who did the grinding or polishing can also be charged with a felony.

It's 30-'06 Winchester cal. Never saw one of those before.
Looks like somebody did ALOT of grinding and polishing on that receiver.
There are some interesting holes drilled on the left side though :confused:

I saw the holes on the left side and assumed they were there to support a bracket for a scope like an M1C. It's definitely a bastard.

Also the heel looks like it's possibly been "buffed" or altered. There were several CAI for sale at the gun show today for 125 each. I examined one closely and found it to be OK looking. I didn't try to build a rifle with it or shoot, or buy it.

I had a Enfield jungle carbine that was sporterized and ALL the numbers and lettering was polished off.Before 67 ?
I think you can get a number from the ATF&E and stamp it.

It is stamped on left side of reciever instead of the rear. I had heard they are newer recievers with Milsurp parts. Basicly a parts gun. It looks like it was fully reparked but the stock is waisted. The S/N can be legally ground off of its original position as long as the exact same number is stamped elsewhere on the receiver.

Would'nt that be considered "altered" ? Was'nt it the FFA of 1938 that said serials could not be altered? Restamping it elsewhere, at least to me, would mean its been altered.

As long as the number is EXACTLY the same it is not considered altered.

A number of years ago, The American Rifleman had the directions for converting the M1 to that configuration. To me they were in the process of ruining a good firearm and I was never tempted to do it. A lot of M1s met this fate. Our local gun shop had one for sale for a number of years with no taker. He salvaged the parts he could and the rest is stashed. The obvious screw up was the serial number was erased when they cut the receiver for the scope, But they did re stamp the serial number on the side. The gun shop(The Powder Horn/ Day Arms corp) where I saw it DID NOT have anything to do with the conversion.
