As some of you know I have a small collection of Winchester lever action rifles mostly model 94's. I've always wanted a Model 71, .348 which was Winchester's last "big game" lever action rifle. Model 71's were made between 1936 and 1958 with a total run of 47254, this one was built in 1947. I was at the Ohio Gun Collectors Association show at Wilmington, Ohio yesterday and while strolling down one of the last isles there it was proudly laying on a table calling to me. I picked it up and gave it a once over. It was nice with good bluing, stock and rifling. I discussed it with the owner while engaging in the obligatory haggling back and forth a few times. Next thing I knew I had a new toy!!! There is still a number of these in service primarily in Alaska where they are used to hunt bear and moose hunt. Here is a picture:

Wow, you talk about blunt force trauma, 250 gr (16 g) 2,350 ft/s (720 m/s) 3,060 ft·lbf (4,150 J) would make a real thud! No wonder they use these to bear hunt, bet it would be good to hunt wild pigs also. I plan on shooting this week, standby for the report.
