Rem 700 vs. Win 70 or others

WOW, next to "religion and politics" or government employment I can't think of another subject that could receive so MANY different points of veiw!
I love Remington 700's, I've owned Winchester Model 70's too, but just didn't like them as well as the Remington. Why? I have no good answer, I guess it's the same as my favorite icecream being vanilla while all the guys I work with like "rocky road!" I just do. I own 9 Model 700's chambered in 300 RUM, 270 WSM , 308 WIN, 270 WIN and 243 WIN and recently sold my 700 in 7mm RUM. I've never experienced any problems with them and I like the fact that when I choose to shoot a different caliber while hunting the overall feel and handling of the rifle is the same. Now having said this I don't think you'll be dissappointed in either.
Savage rifles right now are all the "rage" in my area. Price point being a great influence, but according to friends that own them and what I've read they're suppose to be wonderfully accurate! I don't like Savage, I can't help myself but to me they are just plain "fugly!" The rear of bolt looks too "Third World Country" to me and I just simply won't own one. Plus I'm not a fan of the accutrigger because I never liked my Glock trigger. I'm probably cutting my nose off to spite my face because of all the good things I've heard about them!
So after all my rambling I've not helped a bit! In this case I think you'll do fine with whatever model you choose! Good Luck with it and have fun! Thomas

I just bought a Rem 700 tactical, 20" heavy barrel in .308. Haven't had a chance to work up any loads for it yet, but will provide a range report as soon as I can.

I'm glad that I asked this question; I really appreciate all of your responses. I also handled a Browning X-Bolt but hated the bolt handle itself; felt like me (lefty) trying to cut cardboard with right-handed scissors. It had a funky twist to it that did not feel natural in my hand.

I own a Browning A-Bolt Target in 308 Win. Why did I buy a Browning? Well first off Remington didn't offer a 24" Hvy Barrel 308 with a 1-10" twist. Ruger does and I like Ruger bolt guns (after a good trigger job) but I couldn't find a Ruger when I was in the market. Savage offered one but.......(see above post) so I bought a Browning. My buddy has a couple A-Bolts and they are shooters, plus Brownings come glass bedded and pre floated (which is something I do to my rifles anyway) so I settled for the A-Bolt.

This rifle is nice, it produced a nice group from the bench at 100 yds

I wish the forend was a little longer, the barrel is 28" and I think a little more forend would improve the balance and overall appearance of the rifle. Yet it is a fine firearm! Really my only issue with it is it's not a Remington. :o

Sexy stuff. I'm not even a good enough shooter to appreciate the difference in that vs the "regular" 700, but it's a beautiful package.

Most of the time, I much prefer the Remington 700. Having said that, sitting next to me is a pre-'64 Model 70 action, which is going to get a 30" #6-contour Lilja barrel (1.250" over the chamber, .750" muzzle) in .358 Norma Mag, sitting in most likely a McMillan stock.

I had a pre-64 in .243. The controlled feed is like a Swiss watch next to the push feed of the post and the 700's. I'm sure they both work equally as well but I can't help but to appreciate the pre-64 craftsmanship.
