Any mention of why all the grinding?
Neat piece you got there. I would like the receiver possibly if he is selling it. The stock is the correct WB stock with the correct full border butt plate. You mentioned the bullet guide and it isn't anything special. Now if it was without the W.R.A. and the B was right next to the numbers you would have a real early RS period. The gas cylinder has me miffed as it should barely have a ledge where it turns up to the sight base and the rear ring should be round. I am wondering if it was changed out when the barrel was? The rest of the pats look nice for this period. Looks like someone was just being silly or thought maybe grinding off the drawing numbers would save them from getting caught having taken it. Makes no sense actually since all of those areas are hidden under the wood if it was for show and prep to be blued. Rick B
I also noticed they ground down the gas plug removing the rings. You can see burs on the edge leading into the slot. I'm thinking they were going to blue this rifle. Rick B
Rick, the gas cylinder does have the round rear ring. The cylinder is WRA.

Hello all, New to the forum. This is my rifle so I thought I would chime in a little on what is known about it. The Original owner unfortunately has passed. He was a friend of my Grandfathers and left all his possessions to him. It was then given to me. I do know the orig owner was a machinist by trade so that may explain the grinding though I still am not sure why. I was told he fought in WW2 or Korea but they weren't sure because he never spoke about it. Judging by his age when he died I am betting WW2. If it hadn't been ground on I would left it alone. I am not a collector and probably never will be but I am a shooter so I decided it was a win win for everyone to part it out. I'll get a good shooting rifle built exactly how I want it and some collectors will get some rare parts for their correct winchester build. Mr. Shufflin ahas been very helpful and patient with me even though I constantly add things and pester him incessantly. Oh, and you purists out there can feel free to vent on me. I completly understand your pain and don't mind a bit. If anyone is interested I can try and get more info on the rifle.

Welcome HighAngle. Some of these nitwits (not on this forum) will equate this whole operation to something like melting down the liberty bell to make paperweights. Not so. The replacement barrel and the removing of the numbers killed that rifle as a collectible so by using the parts on other incomplete collectibles you're performing a service. Back in the 50's people were grinding numbers off of milsurp guns like crazy. They would even grind the Gov't Prop. stamps off of 1911's that were purchased from the Gov't. For about a $1500 you could find the parts to correct the rifle but it will be a corrected rifle and not an original one. You're doing the right thing in my opinion. Stu
