Bore is perfect, shiney no pitting MW 1. I was afraid to mail order because of grade description and didnt have time to get to the NS so I had a friend handpick it for me. Havent read any reports yet of any barrels being worn as description says ,who knows?

I didnt use 308 gauges like you suggested because I'm cheap and someone loaned me 7.62 gauges
Closed on Min gauge 1.6355
Didnt close on max gauge 1.6455
put a piece of celephane tape on 1.6355 gauge and lug was up of the receiver about the thickness of the tape
So figured must be around 1.6365" or 1.6375
Sound right to you??????
Took it to the range today ran 4 enblocs or German DAG Surplus through it and it was starting to group real well (better than any of my 30.06 Garands) Then accuracy started going down the tube. Ran a few more through it and gave up discussted. Just figured my eyes were getting tired
When I got home to clean I noticed the gas screw was loose, what a rookie mistake

I've done worse rookie mistakes than that. How's chasing the rear sights all over the place to find zero and then after about 50 rounds the front sight falls off :)
Your tape theory sounds good so long as you know that tape thickness and I'm sure you do.

Glad to see I'm not the only one to do that! Another dumbass mistake I made once was on an early restoration with a numbered gas cylinder. I had got one of those 1941 dated front sight seals to put on the screw. After seating it in place I realized I never tightened the damn screw first, just "snugged it down". Those seals can not be removed without destroying them, so I ordered another. Got a few spares as well.

I got you all beat, onenite I get everything ready for a Match, the next morning I load everything up that I'm gonna need for the next day shooting, scooped up some munchies at the drive thru along the way cause I have some extra time to burn. I get too the range unload everything on the firing line, uummm what am I missing something? can't figure it out and I'm looking everywhere I know I'm missing something what is it?, then my buddy says where's your rifle? That day I scored first place dummy.
